JUDO ONTARIO EAST REGION WELCOMES LOCAL COMMUNITIES TO WEEK LONG OPEN HOUSES

National Judo Day Launches Open House Programs in Dojos Across the Country

SEPTEMBER 25, OTTAWA, ONTARIO –

Judo Ontario East Region welcomes local area sport media to give one of the world’s fastest growing sports a try during the week of September 25 to mark National Judo Day on September 27.

National Judo Day is sponsored by Judo Canada to raise awareness of the health and physical benefits of judo. Media are invited to participate in a training session at local area judo clubs and interview, photography and film nationally ranked and recreational judokas in action.

With roughly 1,000,000 judokas worldwide, Judo is one of the few sports that has participants from nearly every country in the world competing at the Olympic Games. So learn more about this growing sport by contacting a local area judo club representative. The East Region will be going live tomorrow morning on the A-Channel News. Wednesday Sept. 27 at 7:40 am.

Judo Ontario Membership Fees

A fee hike has been announced!

Below is a letter from the Judo Ontario Board and here is a link to the membership application forms.

Dear  MEMBERS OF JUDO ONTARIO

A decision has been reached by the Judo Ontario Board to increase membership fees effective immediately, due to a cut of approx 15% in our Ministry funding over last years’ figure.  This level will remain for the next 2 years.  There are a number of new Provincial Sports Organizations (PSOs) that are awaiting status recognition from the Ministry.  If we don’t increase our membership base  significantly, we are at risk of losing our status.  This means that over the next two years, our goal is 1,700 new members.  If  we can increase our membership to over 5,000, we can secure our position and access a new level of funding.

As another point of consideration, Judo Ontario’s insurance fees have almost doubled in the last two years (from $18,000 to $32,000).  This insurance covers the clubs, senseis and members.  This is the financial reality that Judo Ontario is currently facing.

Although we are increasing our prices, there will be more money coming back to both the Regions and the Dojos.    In discussions with the Executive, Board and Regions, it was decided that for us to strengthen our position with the Ministry, we must start taking all the focus off the high performance athletes in order to enhance the grassroots participation and invest more in the Regions This will bring further funding from the Ministry for developmental programs and services for youth, women, aboriginal, disabled, etc.

With the increased funding for our high performance athletes through the Quest for Gold (approx $150,000 for 19 athletes over the next 2 years guaranteed, with hopes of continuing the program for the next several years) this helps compensate for the reduction of funding to the higher performance activity.  If we do not maintain our status, we will have no access to the Quest for Gold Program – that’s between $140,000 and $160,000 for two years –  $280,000 - $300,000!!!.   Now was the time to implement this new membership plan.

Last year the Regions each received $1,000 for developmental projects.  This year, an additional $1,000 per Region is allocated, plus extra $9,500 will be available to the Regions on a per project basis.   This is an additional $15,000 that is being re-invested in Club and Regional development.

Also newly implemented is flowthrough monies back to the dojos.  For every member registered with Judo Ontario, the club will receive $2.50 to be used as the dojoshu sees fit, perhaps to provide medals or diplomas, bring in a guest instructor, year-end party, etc.   THIS APPLIES TO REGULAR MEMBERSHIPS ONLY We have been trying to get e-mail addresses for all clubs to help improve communications with everyone, so this could be used to assist with this program.  E-mail addresses can be provided through our website – all you have to do is contact our Webmaster Chris Brown (webmaster@judoontario.ca) and he’ll set it all up.  If anyone has any additional projects that could help the club owners, please let the office know (416)426-7006.

Not to be confused with the Temporary Membership**, a new Recreational Membership has been added.  The intent of this new membership category is to increase membership numbers by drawing into pools which we currently are not reaching.   It will apply to any recognized institutions (ie – the YMCA) whom, in partnership with Judo Ontario, hold classes within the curriculum, where the children wish to learn judo, but not participate in tournaments.   If at any time they wish to compete, the judoka may change their status to a regular membership.   This applies only to currently registered members, at that specific institute, and only institutes with a minimum of 50 students may use it.

These judoka are not insured, but will receive a membership card, access to the e-newsletters, certificates at the end of  the year (if requested) and be able to attend training and information seminars.

**The Temporary Membership is for use by any new participant , of any age, to try the sport for a few months, before making a full commitment.  Again, there is no participation in tournaments allowed, but they are insured.

Below are the specific membership fees that were based, with input from Regional Directors.     See the attachments for the new forms, they’re also going to be on the website by Friday the 22nd
